The Made in Group kicked off the official first episode of the Editor’s Pick today with editor Jo Young - Managing Director of Additive X, member of Made in Yorkshire. Jo sat down with Andrew Gillings from Taylor Studwelding, Monica Green from the Partners Group and Paul Wright from GSM Graphic arts to discuss their latest news and on ‘People, The Planet and Technology’.

Jo kicked off the new live segment, which will be streamed across all Made in Group social channels every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month to the group’s 30K+ followers, by introducing herself and the new event.

As Editor, Jo had the opportunity to select 3 recent featured articles from the Made in Yorkshire platform and speak directly with the members who published them live across Made’s social channels.

First up was Andy Gillings from Taylor Studwelding Services to discuss their article “How Taylor Studwelding Machinery Has Developed Over the Years”. Jo said:

“I chose this article because I was interested in their 35-year journey and how they continue to innovate - something all companies aspire to but not all achieve.”

Over the years Taylor Studwelding has enhanced their machinery’s style and technology by consistently investing in their engineer's skills and filling gaps in the market. Giving some examples of this, Andy said:

“We have had to educate and train our engineers as we have gone along, as when recruiting it is difficult to find those with all of the skills that we need. Many of our engineers have been working for us for 20 years or more and during that time they have learned about automation of robotics, gained more in-depth knowledge  of welding electronics, and learned how to program and code.”

After a chat with Andy, Jo then spoke with Monica Green from the Partners Group on the topic of people referencing their article - “Certainty: The Best Perk You Can Offer Your Team Right Now.” The article talks about the pandemic, recession, and Brexit which has brought about feelings of doubt for many employees. Monica said:

“We have had a really turbulent last 12 months and in business, there is always change. As business leaders, we never have all of the answers. Therefore the advice I would give is to make sure you are communicating with the whole of your team.”

Last but not least, Paul took to the stage to discuss GSM Graphic Arts article - “Going Greener Installing Solar Panels”. Jo selected this article not only because Additive X is also looking to install solar panels but also due to the fact that it is an important subject we should all be focusing on. The article mentioned that GSM has been zero landfills for the past 10 years, Paul added:

“We have to accept that it will be more difficult to get to zero landfills, ensuring you are separating cardboards and metals, etc. It did take us a while to find a company who could help us become zero-landfill, as it is expensive, however, the expense is short-term - so therefore definitely worth it.”
